Del Toro was rumored to be working on a Justice League Dark film featuring The Spectre, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Phantom Stranger, Giovanni Zatara, Zatanna, Sargon the Sorcerer, and Etrigan the Demon which would be called "Heaven Sent" in 2010. In January 2013, Del Toro confirmed with IGN that he was working on the film calling it "Dark Universe" writing the story for the script and said he found the perfect screenwriter since he was working on other projects but wouldn't say who. Later on in 2013, Del Toro mentioned that John Constantine would be the one to recruit the team in the film, and that Constantine, along with Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Zatanna, and Deadman will be part of the team along with others. Del Toro stated that if he had the time to direct Dark Universe and WB likes his script and want's to greenlight it he'll do it. In 2014 Del Toro stated that Dark Universe will be separate from the Man of Steel universe before it became an established DC Extended Universe but in December he hinted that the film could possibly fit in the DCEU. Warner Bros. confirmed that Dark Universe is still in development with Scott Rudin as a producer for the film and is pushing for the film to happen. August 24th, 2016, Doug Liman will direct the film with Rudin and Del Toro as producers, with Michael Gilio writing the script from Del Toro's script and is keeping the title Dark Universe. Liman reveals he plans on spinning the genre on it's head with Dark Universe and plans to have it be more character driven, personal, and small. Liman also stated that Dark Universe will also have real horror elements a le Carrie, The Exorcist, and The Omen. Doug Liman has stepped down from directing Dark Universe due to scheduling conflicts with Chaos Walking, meanwhile WB are meeting with directors to replace him. Andy Muschietti is one of them.
